                              Introduction

Every morning, the sun rises, the birds sing, the trees sway, and people wake up to a new day. But have you ever wondered why your school chair doesn’t move, talk, or breathe?

That’s because in our world, everything is divided into living and non-living things. Living things make our world breathe and grow — while non-living things help make life easier and more comfortable.

Meaning:

Living Things are things that have life. They can breathe, grow, move, feed, and reproduce.

Non-Living Things are things that do not have life. They cannot move, grow, or reproduce.

Characteristics of Living Things: (MR NIGERAC - D)

1. Movement ( The ability to change position, move from one place to another)

2. Respiration (breathing)

3. Nutrition (feeding)

4. Irritability (response to external stimuli)

5. Growth ( Increase in size)

6. Excretion (removal of waste)

7. Reproduction (giving birth to young ones)

8. Adaptation ( The ability to cope and adjust in a new environment)

9. Competition ( The battle of Stratification)

10. Death ( The bitter truth)

Examples:

Living things: Man, dog, tree, fish, goat.

Non-living things: Stone, book, chair, car, table.

Differences between Living and Non-Living Things:

Features Living Things Non-Living Things

Life Have life Do not have

life

Movement Move by themselves Do not move

on their own

Growth Grow and change in size Do not grow

Reproduction  Can reproduce Cannot reproduce

                     Moral / Islamic Connection 🌙:

Allah created every living and non-living thing with purpose. The Qur’an says:

“And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the living creatures that He has scattered through them.” — Qur’an 42:29

We should respect and protect both — the living things by caring for them, and non-living things by using them wisely.

Lesson Sequence:

Step One: Teacher introduces the new lesson

Step Two: Teacher revises previous lesson

Step Three: Teacher writes and explains the new lesson

Assessment: She asks the pupils the following Questions 👇

Evaluation Questions:

1. What are living things?

2. Mention three characteristics of living things.

3. Give two examples of non-living things.

4. State two differences between living and non-living things.

Conclusion: She Summarises the entire lesson

Assignment:

  • Draw two living and two non-living things. Label each clearly.

                      Teacher’s Reflection

The beauty of nature is balance — life and stillness. Teaching pupils to value both builds gratitude and awareness of creation.
